Reservoirs and Seals of the Cuu Long, Nam Con Son and Malay Thu Chu basins, Vietnam

Vietnam Petroleum Institute and Core Laboratories with the approval of PetroVietnam are pleased to present this non-exclusive study for reservoirs and seals of the Cuu Long, Nam Con Son and Malay Tho Chu basins in Vietnam.

Vietnam's southern basins have long provided technical and financial reward with Oil and Gas plays in the three basins. However, the exploration success has been mixed and current players in the region are looking at a number of alternative plays. Many such plays involve complex reservoir systems and require accurate data to input into basin modeling programs. The lack of regional data and/or data trades hinders the evaluation of new play concepts.

This study aims to evaluate all reservoir systems within the drilled succession and to evaluate regional and local Seals within a correlative framework. An unprecedented database of 45 wells and 4500 km of seismic has been assembled for study purposes.

  • Specifically, the project will focus on the following:
  • Establish a regional stratigraphic framework based on biostratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy,
  • Characterize the reservoir quality and petrophysical properties of all drilled reservoir lithologies/
  • Evaluate the seal rocks of the reservoirs,

The project will geologically and petrophysically analyze and evaluate rock samples from reservoirs and seals represented by conventional cores, sidewall cores and/or drill cutting samples. The data will be provided within individual well reports, an integrated final report, and will also be accessible digitally across the internet in Core Laboratories RAPID database system. This large and searchable database will provide operators with valuable information for geological evaluation and reducing risk.

Project Components

The primary objective of this project is to provide operators with key geological and petrophysical data derived from the evaluation of rock samples from numerous deep reservoirs and their seals. These data and interpretations will allow operators to improve their formation evaluation, assessment of reservoir quality, prediction of reservoir quality in undrilled areas, and seal integrity evaluation. Specifically, the study will provide participants with the following analyses, data, and interpretations:

  • Core description, core photography, and sedimentological interpretation of depositional facies and environments.
  • Define and evaluate deepwater sandstone reservoir quality in terms of texture, mineralogy, diagenesis, pore system properties, and depositional facies
  • Important petrophysical properties of the cored reservoirs will be measured and evaluated.
  • Petrophysical evaluation of uncored reservoir sediments will be achieved using Rock Typing.
  • Seal and potential seal rocks will be evaluated for their properties and sealing capacity.
  • The stratigraphic component of the study will comprise biostratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy.
