Setting Tools

These tools utilize exhaust gasses generated from a burning power charge to generate relative motion between the pistons and the cylinders. This motion allows force to be applied to a downhole sealing product, such as a plug, packer, or patch. Once the required force is applied to this sealing product, a designed break point with a closely controlled shear force value, breaks and the product is set. The tool may then be retrieved for cleaning and reuse.

Owen offers two basic types of setting tools:

  • Single Stage - These are compact units with a single working cylinder. They are capable of setting bridge plugs, cement retainers and seal bore permanent packers in casing sizes that do not require extra stroke. The tools feature pressure balanced top and bottom pistons. This eliminates presetting of the mentioned products caused by high hydrostatic pressures.
  • Multi Stage - These are longer units with multiple working cylinders and greater stroke length. These additional working cylinders give these tools higher pulling forces than most single stage tools. They are used to set Magna Range Bridge Plugs as well as casing and tubing patches. The tools feature pressure balanced top and bottom pistons. This eliminates presetting of the mentioned products caused by high hydrostatic pressures.
